Poggioreale is a special place for me.
In 1968 the Belize earthquake (terremoto del Belice) devasted Sicily and the people who called it home. Villages were destroyed ,over 100,000 people left stranded, and 231 people lost there lives. A lack of disaster relief planning, suspicion, as well as bureaucracy made the situation so much worse.
All that remains of Old Poggioreale now is the memory of a place that was.
When you walk the streets it feels like you are in a dream, a place half in this world, and the other foot in another.
In 2014 I visited Poggioreale with my newly purchased Nikon D810 to visit the village I had heard so much about in my youth, and to capture a memory of the past that feels so surreal.
Poggioreale was the basis of my first exhibition In 2015 at Berkelouw Book store in Leichardt. This exhibition featured prints and my photo journal Poggioreale which later came third in the International Photography Award in 2016.
